Outsourcing CSS?
I've been doing a lot of CSS work in the past few weeks. I'll be the first to admit some of the quirks of CSS have been maddening. A friend of mine gave me a link to PSD2HTML, and I started thinking...
CSS layout is a specialized skill. I firmly believe a good web designer needs to be good at CSS in order to design a site properly, just like a good print designer needs to understand ink and paper. If you don't know CSS, you will frequently design sites that will be unnecessarily difficult to code.
But good CSS layout can also take time. PSD2HTML charges $422 for three pages of "hi-end" markup ($306 for less polished but functional code). That should be more than enough to create the bones of a site. You could modify those pages to build whatever else you need. Now take your hourly rate and multiply by the number of hours it would take you do create those three pages yourself.
I haven't tried them, but it's something I may consider in the future. They get good reviews according to the searching I did.
BTW, an extensive list of other services that do the same thing can be found at Aloe Studios.

Joshua,
Andy from Aloe Studios here...
(what a funny coincidence - I'll be in St. Louis tomorrow on my way to visiting family in Rolla!)
I've only read good things about PSD2HTML, and they've been doing it for a while now - so they're probably a safe bet.
I've found that there are plenty of designers and developers who are great when it comes to their craft, but aren't strong in CSS. In that case, outsourcing the XHTML/CSS is a viable option.
It seems there is a huge need for this service, and people like myself, PSD2HTML, and the others are providing a valuable, needed service with a reasonable price and turnaround.
I didn't want to cause any controversy with my list, but I'd recommend working with someone as local as possible so communication and time zone issues are minimized.
Hi Andy!
I had no idea you were a fellow midwesterner. Where exactly are you? If I'd known you were going to be in town, I'd have offered to buy you a coffee. Or a frozen custard.
well, I'm born and raised in Sacramento, CA where I still live, but my wife is from Rolla...
A lot of people say Sacramento is like the midwest though - although the thunderstorms are nothing like in the real midwest!
Hello - just wanted to let you know that I've been very happy with psd2html's service. I've used them half a dozen times now with no problems at all. Their code is clean, professionial, well optimized and turned around in a decent enough time - within 2 business days. I've also used xhtmlized.com a couple of times and have been equally impressed. psd2html win on price though!
